Choosing a college major should strike at some of the most important emotional and instinctive drives a student has. To realize the full value of a college major for learning, excellence, and professional achievement and career performance, the college major should adaptable to all potential career choices and hopefully not close any career paths for which the student might be fitted unnecessarily. Choosing a college major should align with the student’s individual “gut” instinct of where they want to go in life and how they can succeed.

The world of choosing a college major can be tempting and confusing. Many job titles and employment positions in existence today did not exist when the people advising the student went to college. Internet advertiser, online college instructor, PHP programmer, HTML coder, and other computer and Internet majors did not even exist. More conventional schools with older histories and legacies of certain types of college major may have no pre-professional majors at all! The student must align their skills and abilities with what courses measure and where they believe they can excel and learn more.

A confusing piece of advice often given to students choosing a college major is to go with a major that challenges them or to not take too easy a road. in a different hiring climate and competitive atmosphere of job searching that might have been good advice. But today’s tough job market extends across many fields of employment heretofore open for new graduates. Finding a college major which matches the best skills and interests a student has will be the best bet. The current job market will not always be the one in which the graduate will be looking for work.

Many college graduates reflect after they have spent many years in the workplace that if they had known the demands and types of experience that was promoted or recognized in a professional capacity they would have changed the course they took in college so they would be more prepared for the challenges ahead. The truth is, many students do not have a crystal ball and cannot know what skills are needed in whatever job they may be offered. No longer can many college majors demand the same career they augur by force of college course content alone.

The college major choice must be done after a careful survey of course offerings that fulfill the major for a given school or university. Classes and outlines of the material and skills or training involved for that college course and its relevance to the college major are outline in the university or college course catalogue. Currently many courses may be listed in last year’s course catalogue that may not be offered again due to teacher scheduling or college major enrollment. These are the questions students should be asking in their college entrance interviews.

Choosing a college major should also be done with specific colleges, schools or universities in mind. Examination of the hiring figures for graduates in those college majors from that school should be examined. If ongoing employment and job security are the optimum benefits a college student is looking to provide, then the analysis of this data before enrollment in a college or matriculation to a university is necessary. The data may conflict with accepted knowledge or conventional practice, and much of the advice students receive from well-meaning family and friends.

The accounting major from an Ivy league school may not be as competitive as a Fine Arts degree from a an extremely competitive private school for the Arts. It is a common concept that certain schools are known for their curriculum especially when they are extremely competitive or extremely weak. If the classes are not necessarily underscoring the key skills associated with the college major, they will not translate into achievable career performance.
